Notes:
Type of services provided:
HC-MR embeds the practices of Parent-Child Intervention Therapy (PCIT; see review) into a framework that supports American Indian and Alaska Native traditional beliefs and parenting practices that regard children as being the center of the Circle. Live skill coaching is a core strategy used in PCIT. On-line video consultation is used in live remote real time coaching sessions with families to overcome issues of distance, isolation and time constraints. Core values of the translation, transformation and enhancement of PCIT to be more compatible with traditional ways include that a child was received by all relatives and affected by all interactions around them, that caregivers’ responsibility was to cultivate the positive nature of the child with honor and respect, to view discipline as the teaching of self-control and learning about the rules of life versus a focus on punishment and avoiding and adapting jargon and technical aspects of PCIT that may be overwhelming or offensive to American Indian and Alaska Native caregivers (Bigfoot, 2011).
