Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians, WI

The Red Cliff Family Violence Prevention Specialized Services for Children and Abused Parents Demonstration Project will expand capacity by putting greater focus on the needs of children and youth exposed to family violence, domestic violence or dating violence, child abuse and neglect. This project will allow the Tribe to hire staff that will provide trauma-informed, developmentally and age-appropriate services. It will include staff training; integration of innovative culturally relevant services; collaborating with technical assistance providers to improve processes and outcomes; and incorporate feedback from children, youth and abused parents into the design of program enhancements. The project will also provide services for non-abusing parents to support their role as caregivers and their role in responding to the social, emotional, and developmental needs of their children. This will be accomplished using proven practices and unique methods such as counseling with an Anishinaabe healing consultant and equine therapy.

Staff will participate in Positive Indian Parenting Trainings, Native Wellness Healthy Relationships Trainer of Trainers, and use case management models proven to be more effective within a Native community. A 2019 Tribal Action Plan developed by an Alcohol and Other Drug Addictions (AODA) Task Force appointed by the Tribal Council has specific goals and objectives that include providing support services to those children impacted the most by the drug epidemic. This identified gap in services will be filled by this grant, providing those targeted services for children and their non-abusing parents.
